A new chapter for the Mews

Every historic hotel has a few stories waiting to be discovered. At Castle Hotel, one of our favourites is tucked away from the main house. 

The Mews is a self-contained building with just six beautifully refurbished guestrooms and suites. It offers a different way to stay in Windsor, with a little more space and privacy while still being moments from the heart of the hotel. 

Long before it welcomed overnight guests, however, the Mews had a very different purpose. 

In the 18th century, it was the hotel’s stable block for the royal post horses. At the time, Castle Inn landlord Richard Martin was also Windsor’s postmaster, and horses from here carried post between Windsor and Maidenhead. 

Martin played an important part in the hotel’s history. He offered post chaises, post coaches and horses from the inn and, under his stewardship, Castle Hotel received the first of what would eventually become eight Royal Warrants, supplying horses and carriages to the royal household. 

The horses have long since gone, but the Mews remains part of a story stretching back through centuries of Windsor life. 

A new purpose 

Today, the building has been completely refurbished as part of Castle Hotel’s wider transformation. 

Inside, beautiful patterns, layered textures and bespoke furnishings bring a contemporary British feel, alongside thoughtful touches including Roberts radios, Nespresso machines, rainfall showers and British-made organic toiletries. The suites offer separate lounge areas and additional space to settle in, particularly welcome for families or longer stays. 

With only six rooms across two floors, the Mews has a more intimate feel than the main house and can even be taken exclusively, bringing everyone together under one roof. 

Right in the heart of Windsor 

Step outside and Windsor is waiting. The Castle is only moments away, with the Long Walk, the town centre and Windsor Bridge all close by. Cross the river and you can be exploring Eton within minutes. 

After a day out, return to the Mews and enjoy having a little more space of your own, away from the bustle of the High Street but still at the heart of your Castle Hotel stay. 

From royal post horses to a new generation of hotel guests, the Mews has changed considerably over the centuries, but its place in Castle Hotel’s story continues. 

Some stories deserve another chapter.
